Trivandrum is the capital
city of Kerala, lying on the southwest coast of India. The city derives
its name from the deity at the Sree Anantha Padmanabhaswami Temple, one
of the major landmarks of the place. Thiruananthapuram or Trivandrum
retains its past glory of the capital of a princely state.
Thiruvananthapuram is, decidedly, one of the cleaner and well-planned
cities of the India. The city's scenic appeal, its enchanting beaches,
and overwhelming greenery only add to its uniqueness. It embodies the
magical feel of Kerala, as a whole, and lends terrific insight into the
culture of the state. |

| Culture |
| |
|
Thiruvananthapuram, earlier known as Trivandrum, is the capital
city of Kerala. The name literally splits into "Tiru", "Anantha"
"puram" meaning "the town of Lord ANANTHA". About 96% of the
people of the District speak Malayalam as their mothertongue.
Only 2.5% of the people speak Tamil as their mothertongue. Rice
is the staple food of the people. There is no great
difference in the dietary habits of the Christians and Muslims .
Kanji or Rice gruel with some vegetable curry and pickles formed
the main breakfast until very recently in almost all families,
but it has now been replaced by tea, coffee or other beverages
taken along with dishes like Dosa , Idly, Poori, Chappathi
andUppuma. Thiruvananthapuram has produced great poets and men of
letters from very ancient times. One of the ancient poets was
Ayyipillai Asan of Avaaduthura near Kovalam. He wrote the famous
work 'Ramakadhapattu'. Mahakavi Kumaran Asan and Mahakavi Ulloor
S. Parameswara Iyer were the two outstanding poets from this
district. The reign of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal saw the golden
age of carnatic music in Kerala. Contributions of
Thiruvananthapuram district to painting are immense. The
Padhmanabha Swamy temple and the Koikkala temple at Attingal
have several murals and paintings which are examples of 16th
century Kerala paintings. Raja Ravi Varma, an illustrious
painter of this district, has contributed substantially to
Indian paintings. Some of his famous paintings are preserved in
the Sri Chitra Art Gallery. |
