Nagarhole National Park   Iruppu Falls

The park derives its name from the winding river - Nagarhole meaning "snake river" - which flows through the park. The 640 sq km of gently undulating terrain at the foothills of the Brahmagiri hills is covered with thick tropical forest, grassy swamps and numerous rivers and streams. The park and animal life is part of the country's first "bio-sphere reserve".

It is located in south Kodagu on the Brahmagiri range of hills. River Lakshmana-tirtha flows nearby. The river descends perpendicularly into a great cataract known as the Iruppu Falls. This place is believed to possess the power to cleanse one's sins and is visited by thousands of devotees from far and near on Shivaratri day. There is temple dedicated to Sri Ram, surrounded by paddy fields, from where it is a climb up to the falls through natural forest.

Located 8 kms from Madikeri. Even during the summer there is plenty of water in these falls. The roar of the falls can be heard from the main road, from where a path goes through lovely coffee and cardamom plantations right up to them. The chirping of innumerable birds which are easier heard then seen, fill the air with sweet music.

It is a 19th century fort that witnessed several heroic battle, this Fort now houses a temple, a chapped and a small museum. The view of Madikeri is, quite simply, stunning. The beautiful now houses Govt. Offices of the District Administration.

Keil Poldu The Huttari Festival The Kaveri Festival

In Coorg, the festival season starts with Keil Poldu day in September, when the martial race that produced two great Indian soldiers-Cariyappa and Thimmaiah-worship their weapons.

The Huttari Feast is held to celebrate the Annual rice harvest.This name is derived from the Malayalam word "Pudi-ari"(new rice), transformed grammatically into Coorg as huttari. It generally occurs in the month of October or November.
 

In the mid of October, Coorg decks itself in bridal splendour for the grand Kaveri Feast. The Bhagamandal Temple in the middle of Kaveri Valley with its copper roof is the place where the festivities are held. One or two representatives from each Coorg house makes it to the festival.

The Best Time to visit Coorg is from November to April. The climate remains pleasant throughout the year. The temperature hovers between 30 and 16 degrees in summers and winters.
