Chittorgarh, situated 112 km from Udaipur, has its
legendary origins in the Mahabharata. Historically, the
site was a fort and the capital of Mewar till Akbar
captured it. There are many tourist attractions in
Chittorgarh . There is the Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower),
an imposing 37-metre high structure with nine storeys,
covered with exquisite sculputres of Hindu deities
anddepicting episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharatha.
The Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) stands 22 metres high.
The tower is dedicated to Adinathji, the first of the
Jain Tirthankaras and is decorated with figures of the
Jain pantheon.

The palace within the
Chittorgarh Fort is of great historical and architectural interest.
This palace is of great tourist importance as this was the
birthplace of Maharana Udai Singh. The palace has also the
distinction of being the residence of mystic poetess Meera Bai.
It was build by Maharana
Kumbha in 1449. The temple is dedicated to the mystic poetess Meera,
and a devotee of Lord Krishna. Meera was born in Kurki village near
Merta to Ratan Singh Rathors, and was married to Bhojraj son of Rana
Sanga of Mewar. Legends say that she consumed poison set by
Vikramaditya but nothing happended to her due to the blessings of
Lord Krishna.
Six jain temples are
situated on the fort of Chittor. The largest and chief among them is
the temple of Bhagawan Adinatha with fifty-two devkulikas. The place
is known as ‘Sattavish devri’. It means that at some time in the
past, there were twenty-seven temples here. The Digamabar Jain
Kirtistambh and seven-storied Kirtistambh are two among them.

Just
beyond the Rana Kumbha Palace, this palace is much more modern.It
was Build by Maharana Fateh Singh. This place has been named Fateh
Prakesh after Maharana Fateh Singh. There is a big Ganesh idol, a
fountain, and different frescoes which are to be seen to be
believed.This palace, now a museum, has a rich collection of
sculptures from temples and buildings in the Fort.
It was build by
Maharana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over Mahmud Khilji of
Malwa in 1440A.D. This imposing 37 meter high tower with nine
storeys is adorned by exquisite sculptures of Hindu deities and the
scenes depicting the different episodes from the two great epics
Ramayana and Mahabharata. About 157 narrow steps lead to the terrace
where the balconies give a beautiful top angle view of the whole
town.
Padmini's Palace is
built beside a large pool with a pavilion in its centre. Legend
relates that, as Padmini sat in this pavilion, Ala-ud-din was
permitted to see her reflection in a mirror in the palace. This
glimpse was the spark that convinced him to destroy Chittor in order
to possess her.

The Camel Festival
begins with a colourful procession of bedecked camels against the
red sandstone backdrop of the Junagarh Fort. the festivity advances
to the open sand-spreads of the grounds, followed by the best breed
competition, the tug-of-war contest, camel dance and acrobatics,
etc. Hundreds of tourists and thousands of locals and dignitaries
revel in this man-and-animal affair organised especially for the
tourists.
The festival is
organised by the tourist authorities as tourist entertainment around
January-February. The very rich and colourful Rajasthani folk
culture is on show here for a few days. Rajasthani men and tall
beautiful women dressed in their brightly costumes dance and sing
lingering ballads of valour, romance and tragedy. The high points of
the festival are - snake charmers, puppeteers, acrobats, folk
performers do rapid trade.
14 January is
celebrated in India as Makar Sankranti.In Chittorgarh it is
popularly celebrated as Desert Kite Festival. Kite makers flaunt kites sized as
big as 1.5km of various shapes and Designs.
Its been the most popular event recently, even tourists can take
part in various kite flying competitions. The colours that flaunt in
the blue sky mesmerises the viewers.
