Lingaraj Temple Parasuramesvera Temple Nandankanan Sanctuary

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva . Lingaraja Temple represents the peak of achievement in Orissas middle period. The 54m spire of the temple dominates the Bhubaneswar landscape. Set in a walled compound, the Lingaraj is surrounded by many smaller shrines. The Lingaraj compound has another outstanding temple, dedicated to Parvati.

It is a 7th century Shiva Temple.The classical temole is one of the oldest in Bhubaneswar. Located close to the main Bhubaneswar to Puri Road, on the same side as the Lingaraj Temple, the Grove of the Perfect Beings is a cluster of about 20 smaller temples. It's the best preserved of all Bhubaneswar's ancient temples and has finely detailed bas-reliefs of elephant and horse processions and Siva images.

The sanctuary is situated About 20 km from Bhubaneswar. Nandankanan was established as a sanctuary in 1979. In effect it was really a Biological Park encapsulated in lush and natural landscape, offering its inhabitants a true feel of their natural habitat. Nandankanan also runs a Lion Safari and White Tiger Safari. Nearby is the Chandaka Elephant Reserve.

Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves Chilika Lake Rajarani Temple

Twin hills honey-combed with Jain caves that reveal the sculptural art of the 2nd century BC makes an interesting study of the life and times of Jain ascetics.  Khandagiri has 19 caves and Udaigiri has 44 caves.
 

Chilika, is located about 100 kms from Bhubaneswar. A narrow isthmus separates Chilika from the waters of the Bay of Bengal. Spread over an area of 1,100 sq. km it was declared a sanctuary in 1987. In Winters  thousands of migratory birds flying in from as far off as Siberia to make their winter sojourn in strange waters.

This 11th century Raja Rani temple is aesthetically endearing, sculpted with graceful feminine figures. It is surrounded by well-maintained gardens. It's one of the best of the Bhubaneswar temples.

Maha Shivratri Ashokastami 

The festival falls on the 14th day of the dark half of Phalgun and is observed by devotees all over the country. Devotees keep fast and perform puja throughout the night and keep a vigil to witness the sacred lamp on the temple top.

On the day of Ashokashtami in the month of March, the image of Lingaraja (Lord Shiva) and other deities are taken in a procession from Lingaraja Temple to the Rameshwara Temple. Hundreds of devotees participate in pulling the chariot that carries the deities. The deities remain in the Rameshwara Temple for four days.

 
  Culture
 

Bhubaneswar holds an amazing artistic tradition, which enjoyed reform custom from the temples. Land of great artists and craftsmen, still retain their nativity . The rich Orissa culture is also depicted in its glowing traditional Odissi Dance. The intricate and elegant hand, feet and facial movements are all the additional charms of the dance. The dance features Jayadev's "Gita Govinda" the 12th century epic that deals with stories representing Krishna's love for Radha expressing both divine and passionate emotions in the dance drama. In olden days the dance was a form of devotion and was performed in the temples as a tribal offering to the Gods. "Chaitghoda", the traditional dance of fishermen shows rich cultural heritage and is performed by using a dummy horse depicting the battle drama called "Pari ka Nritya".

 
Weather
 

The best time for visit Bhubaneswar would be between October to March. The weather during this time is very pleasant and conducive to travel. This is also the time when millions of migratory birds make their way from the north to nest in the lakes and forests of Orissa. Bhubaneswar experience occasionally very high temperatures for a few days in the months of May-June-July, and a couple of weeks of heavy rains during the monsoons.
