Aurangabad is named after the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb.
The city is gateway to the World Heritage Sites of
Ajanta and Ellora.Aurangabad was an important seat of
the Mughal Empire during the Mughal rule in India. The
town holds a good number of Mughal architectural marvels
making it an important historical destination of
Maharashtra. The town is situated on the banks of the
Kham River.It is interesting to note that Aurangabad was
formerly known as Khirki (meaning window) because of its
strategic position that provided a window view of the
Deccan plateau.

Ajanta caves 29 in
all, virtually trace the evolution and development of Budhism in
India. Created out of hard rock. the caves range between the 2nd
century BC and 7th century AD.
The Ellora caves, of
which there are a total of 34, are carved into the sides of a
basaltic hill 30 kolometers from Aurangabad. The finest specimens of
cavetemple architecture, they boast of elaborate facades and house
exquisitely adorned interiors. These structures representing the
three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, were carved between
the 350 AD to 700 AD.
The city of Fatehpur
Sikri is located at a distance of 40 km from Agra. The city was built
to symbolize the power of Akbar's empire.The grand monuments in
Fatehpur Sikri are Panch Mahal, the Buland Darwaza, a prayer hall
for the new religion called Din-i-Illahi started by Akbar.

About
24 kms from Aurangabad are the elegant Bani Begum Gardens, at the
centre of which is the tomb of Bani Begum, the consort of one of
Aurangzeb's sons. These gardens built in various styles, equipped
with massive domes, fountains and fluted pillars, are a fine
specimen of the architecture of the time.
Just outside the
city, lie the Aurangabad caves, excavated between the 2nd and 6th
century AD. There are twelve caves in all. Tantric influences can be
discerned in their architecture and iconography.
One of the earliest
Mughal gardens, it was laid out by Emperor Babar-the founder of the
Mughal dynasty. It is said that Babar was temporarily buried here
before being permanently interred at Kabul in Afghanistan.

Aurangabad
airport is situated 10 km east of the city. Both Indian Airlines
and Jet Airways have a daily flight to Mumbai (Bombay). The
Indian Airlines has an evening flight to Delhi via Udaipur and
Jaipur.
Aurangabad can be easily approached by rail from Hyderabad,
Secunderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. There are regular trains
available on South Central Railway to reach Aurangabad.
Aurangabad is well connected with major cities of the state by a
good network of roadways. The distances for some of the major

of zinc and copper. It usually involves intricate workmanship of
pure silver, either embossed, overlaid or inlaid on the metal
surface. Maharashtra has a strong textile history and has
different types of saris or materials that is typical of a
particular area or region, such as Kolhapur, Pune and Paithan,
Aurangabad. Mashru and Himru are two types of fabrics made of
cotton and silk with lusture of satin. Aurangabad is famous for
these fabrics.The art of weaving Paithani saris is 2000 years
old. The yarn used is pure silk and the zari or gold threads are
drawn from pure gold. A heavily brocaded Paithani sari takes
anywhere from six months to one and a half years to weave.

The average
temperature in summers might rise up to 40 'C and summer
continues from the month of march to the month of July. Winters
can be quite chilly with temperature dropping up to 5 'C.The
tourist season extends almost through out the year. April to
July are the summer months which are fairly warm. The rainy
season, from August to October is very pleasant, and the winter
months, from November to March are the coolest.
