The most
holy city of Sikhs, Amritsar derived its name from
the water pool (Pool of Nectar), the 4th saintly teacher
of the Sikh faith constructed that. The city lies on the
main Grand Trunk (GT) road from Delhi to Jalandhar to
Amritsar connecting to Lahore in Pakistan. Amritsar is
home to the breathtaking and serene Harmandir Sahib,
also known as the Golden Temple, and is the spiritual
and cultural centre of the Sikh Religion.The Golden
Temple was Founded by the fourth Guru of Sikhs, Guru Ram
Das, it was completed by his successor Guru Arjun Dev.
The land on which, it was built, was gifted to Guru Ram
Das by Mughal emperor Akbar. The main spoken language in
Amritsar is Punjabi. Other languages spoken in the city
are Hindi, English and Urdu. |

Golden Temple,
Located in the heart of the city, is the most visited tourist
attraction of Amritsar. Characterized by its four entrance doors
(called deoris) in all four directions and the tastefully decorated
shrines, in terms of art and architecture, the Golden Temple
welcomes everyone regardless of the religion or faith one follows. |
It is an important
Sikh tank about 25km south of Amritsar. There's a temple, which
predates Amritsar, and a tower on the east side of the tank, which
was also constructed by Ranjit Singh. It's said that any leper who
can swim across the tank will be miraculously cured.

A historical monument
that tells the sad story of mass killing during the independence
movement in India, Jalianwallah Bagh is another must visit in
Amritsar. Here lies the memorial of the martyrs of the 1919 massacre
by British General Dyer.At the east end of the garden there is a
large memorial built in memory of those who died here. |

Durgiana Temple, outside the Lohagarh gate of the old city, is
dedicated to Goddess Durga and dates back to 16th century. This
Hindu temple also draws its share of visitors. Easily accessible
from the Golden Temple, the Durgiana Mandir also offers puja to
deities of Lakshmi and Narayana.

One of the many
nearby places to visit from Amritsar is the Wagah Border. Located on
the Indo-Pakistan border, Wagah is 28 kilometres from the Amritsar
main town. A good number of visitors come to this place to see the
change of guards ceremony and the flag hoisting and lowering
activities which are done with great skill and precision by the
border security forces of both the countries. |
This beautiful garden
is named as a tribute to Guru Ram Das, the founder of the city of
Amritsar. It is situated in the new part of town and has a museum in
the summer palace built by the Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh
(1780-1839) .The museum contains weapons dating back to Mughal times
and some portraits of the ruling houses of the Punjab and a replica
of the diamond 'Kohinoor'. |

(the pure ones). It is a day of great jubilation when the vigorous
Bhangra dance is performed in celebration. |
Diwali means festival
of lights. Among the Sikhs, Diwali came to have special significance
from the day the town of Amritsar was illuminated on the return to
it of Guru Hargobind (1595-1644) who had been held captive in the
Fort at Gwalior under the orders of the Mughal emperor, Jahangir
(1570-1627). |
