Chennai
is the capital of the state of Tamil Nadu and is India's
fourth largest metropolitan city. It is located on the
Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. Chennai (formerly
known as Madras) is the gateway to Southern India. The
367-year-old city is the 31st largest metropolitan area
in the world. The city is a large commercial and
industrial centre, and is known for its cultural
heritage and temple architecture. The city is the
automobile capital of India, with around forty percent
of the automobile industry having a base there. The 12
kilometer long Marina Beach forms the city's east coast
and is one of the longest beaches in the world. The city
is also known for its sport venues and hosts India's
only ATP tennis event, the Chennai Open.

Located at the east
of the city is the famous Marina beach, at Kamarajar Road, 3 Km away
from Madras. This is supposed to be the second longest beach in the

accounts for over 37 varieties of birds, like black chested, black
winged kite, honey buzzard, pariah kite, and so on.

The
building was initially known as Victoria Memorial Hall and was
designed by Henry Irwin. There is a good collection of old
paintings and sculptures including Tanjore paintings on glass;
Rajput and Mughal miniature paintings; Deccan paintings from 17th
century; and handcrafts, metalware, and ivory carvings from 11th and
12th century.
The Temple is at
Peter's Road, Triplicane. It is one of the oldest temple in Madras,
built by Pallavas in the 8th century and rebuilt by the Vijayanagar
Kings in 11th century. The temple is dedicated to Hindu's god
Krishna. It has a coloured gopuram and several shrines with
beautiful carvings.
The Kapaleeshwar
Temple was constructed in the 13th century and is a living example
of the architectural skills of the Dravidians.The temple is situated
in the Malaypore area of Chennai. The main entrance facing east is
painted in red, blue and yellow with Puranic legends sculpted on the
sanctum sanctorum.

Chennai is an
international airport connected by several international
airlines including Air India, British Airways, Lufthansa,
Singapore Airlines, Air Lanka and Malaysia Airlines while Indian
Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines etc handle the
domestic traffic. The Kamaraj Domestic Airport and the Anna
International Airport are located at Tirusulam, at a distance of
20 km from the city.
The city of Chennai is well connected to all the major cities in
India through a wide network of railways. There are two major
railway stations in Chennai. Chennai Central is the bigger one
and connects the city by broad gauge as also broad gauge trains
to all major cities and towns of India. The Egmore station is
the starting point for both metre gauge and broad gauge trains
proceeding to destinations within the state as well as trains to
neighbouring Kerala.
Chennai is well connected by network of roads with all the
important places in TamilNadu and other parts of India. Most
government bus services for Tamil Nadu and interstate now
operate from the newly opened Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal at
Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Koyembedu.It is claimed to be the
largest bus station in Asia.

Festival
Vinayaka Chathurthi
Pongal, the four-day
Harvest Festival, is celebrated all over the state in January. The
festival begins on the last day of the Tamil month. On the second
day Chakkara Pongal, a delicacy made of harvested rice cooked with
jaggery, ghee and cashew nuts is offered to the Gods. Pongal ends on
the fourth day with a bullfight.
The Chennai Dance and
Music Festival is held every year in Chennai from mid December to
mid January. The month long musical extravaganza is a celebration of
classical music and dances of South India and features performances
by various artistes from different parts of India.
Lord Ganesha is
among the most worshiped deities of the State. The Ganesa Puja is
performed with fervor and gaiety. The celebration ends on the ninth
day when the idols of Ganesha will be carried in procession chanting
his name and submerged in water in wells, lakes, rivers or ocean.
Culture
Chennai is a

Being situated at
the tropical zone, Chennai normally has a very hot and humid
climate. The best time to visit Chennai city is the winter
season from the months of November to February. Winter and
summer temperature does not vary much as it rains frequently
through the year.
