Marina Beach Fort Museum Guindy National Park

Located at the east of the city is the famous Marina beach, at Kamarajar Road, 3 Km away from Madras. This is supposed to be the second longest beach in the World and runs to a length of 12 Km. On the beach there is the Anna Park.

It is at Fort St. George. Museum has 10 rooms displaying the documents of Indian History. The old uniforms, coins, padlocks, old prints and palanquins are displayed here. The banquet hall upstairs has a collection of paintings of the governors and officials of the British regime.

Guindy National Park is one of the prime tourist attraction at chennai. This park boasts of over 24 varieties of trees. Also more than 14 varieties of shrubs, over 14 types of mammals like elephant, antilope, spotted dear, jungle cat, toddy cat, Indian civet, etc. The park also accounts for over 37 varieties of birds, like black chested, black winged kite, honey buzzard, pariah kite, and so on.
 

National Art Gallery Parthasarathi Temple Kapaleeshwar Temple

The building was initially known as Victoria Memorial Hall and was designed by Henry Irwin.  There is a good collection of old paintings and sculptures including Tanjore paintings on glass; Rajput and Mughal miniature paintings; Deccan paintings from 17th century; and handcrafts, metalware, and ivory carvings from 11th and 12th century.

The Temple is at Peter's Road, Triplicane. It is one of the oldest temple in Madras, built by Pallavas in the 8th century and rebuilt by the Vijayanagar Kings in 11th century. The temple is dedicated to Hindu's god Krishna. It has a coloured gopuram and several shrines with beautiful carvings.
 

The Kapaleeshwar Temple was constructed in the 13th century and is a living example of the architectural skills of the Dravidians.The temple is situated in the Malaypore area of Chennai. The main entrance facing east is painted in red, blue and yellow with Puranic legends sculpted on the sanctum sanctorum.

By Air By Rail By Bus

Chennai is an international airport connected by several international airlines including Air India, British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air Lanka and Malaysia Airlines while Indian Airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines etc handle the domestic traffic. The Kamaraj Domestic Airport and the Anna International Airport are located at Tirusulam, at a distance of 20 km from the city.

The city of Chennai is well connected to all the major cities in India through a wide network of railways. There are two major railway stations in Chennai. Chennai Central is the bigger one and connects the city by broad gauge as also broad gauge trains to all major cities and towns of India. The Egmore station is the starting point for both metre gauge and broad gauge trains proceeding to destinations within the state as well as trains to neighbouring Kerala.

Chennai is well connected by network of roads with all the important places in TamilNadu and other parts of India. Most government bus services for Tamil Nadu and interstate now operate from the newly opened Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, Koyembedu.It is claimed to be the largest bus station in Asia.

Pongal Chennai Dance and Music Festival Vinayaka Chathurthi

Pongal, the four-day Harvest Festival, is celebrated all over the state in January. The festival begins on the last day of the Tamil month. On the second day Chakkara Pongal, a delicacy made of harvested rice cooked with jaggery, ghee and cashew nuts is offered to the Gods. Pongal ends on the fourth day with a bullfight.

The Chennai Dance and Music Festival is held every year in Chennai from mid December to mid January. The month long musical extravaganza is a celebration of classical music and dances of South India and features performances by various artistes from different parts of India.

Lord Ganesha  is among the most worshiped deities of the State. The Ganesa Puja is performed with fervor and gaiety. The celebration ends on the ninth day when the idols of Ganesha will be carried in procession chanting his name and submerged in water in wells, lakes, rivers or ocean.

Pongal, celebrated in the month of January, is the most important festival of and is celebrated over a period of five days. Pongal has been designated the "State Festival" for its unique celebration that is typical of Tamil Nadu. Tamil New Year's day signifying the beginning of the Tamil calendar usually falls on April 14 and is celebrated widely. Being a cosmopolitan city, almost all major religious festivals like Deepavali, Eid and Christmas are celebrated here.
